The New Directions stuck together in real life too, with Glee<\/em><\/a> alum Kevin McHale<\/strong><\/a> revealing Naya Rivera<\/a> and Jenna Ushkowitz<\/strong><\/a> once held an intervention to address his use of steroids.<\/p>\n

The 35-year-old actor, who played Artie Abrams<\/a> on the hit Fox series, revealed his costars confronted him about his drug use while having dinner with Cory Monteith<\/a> in 2010.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we were filming two episodes [of Glee<\/em>] at the same time [and] in the middle of it, flying to England to [perform on X-Factor<\/em><\/a>],\u201d he recalled on his and Ushkowitz\u2019s \u201cAnd That\u2019s What You REALLY Missed\u201d<\/a> podcast on Monday, June 26. \u201cAnd I was sick as a dog on all kinds of medicine including prednisone, which is a steroid, and it turned me into a monster.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the prescription gave him the \u201ccourage\u201d to \u201cfight\u201d for his solo in the show\u2019s season 2 \u201cThriller\/Heads Will Roll\u201d mashup, Ushkowitz, 37, and Rivera noticed that the medicine was changing his behavior for the worse.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were all like, \u2018So, hey, so why are you taking these steroids?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018Well, \u2018cus I\u2019m sick. I\u2019m supposed to take them,\u2019\u201d McHale noted. \u201c[You\u2019re] like, \u2018But it\u2019s not the antibiotic, right?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018No.\u2019 You\u2019re like, \u2018OK, I think you should stop taking them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite having a few steroids left to take, the Texas native took his castmates\u2019 advice and laid off the prescription. \u201c[Jenna said], \u2018Yeah, you\u2019re not sleeping. You\u2019re acting crazy. You need to stop taking them.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Yeah, I think you\u2019re right,\u2019\u201d McHale added. \u201cI hadn\u2019t slept in days. I was losing my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

While he is still close with Ushkowitz \u2014 they launched their podcast<\/a> in October 2022 \u2014 Rivera died at the age of 33<\/a> in July 2020 after saving her son, Josey<\/a>, from drowning during a boating trip in Lake Piru, California.<\/p>\n

McHale isn\u2019t the only former Glee<\/em> cast member to struggle with substance abuse<\/a>. Monteith died of an accidental drug overdose<\/a> at the age of 31 in July 2013. The British Columbia Coroners Service confirmed in a statement at the time<\/a> that the Canada native \u201cdied of a mixed drug toxicity, involving heroin and alcohol.\u201d<\/p>\n

The podcast cohosts have been candid about the loss over the years, as Ushkowitz exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em><\/a> in November 2022 that she felt like \u201cwhen Cory died, the show died with him in many ways.\u201d She added: \u201cIt became a different show \u2026 it was really hard to do and it was never the same, for me at least.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glee<\/em> ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2015<\/a>, with Monteith\u2019s character, Finn Hudson, being killed off during the show\u2019s fifth season.<\/p>\n

McHale, for his part, told Us<\/em> he once received \u201cflack\u201d for voicing the same opinion about the show post-Monteith. \u201cPeople on Twitter and all these things were saying that I was, like, talking crap about the show,\u201d he shared. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018No, no, no. I just said the show was never the same after Cory<\/a> died because obviously it was not.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
